In most drylands, vegetation is typically not homogeneously spread in space but gathered in patches of vegetation separated by areas of bare ground. What are the mechanisms that explain the emergence of these characteristic patterns? Can this spatial patterning could provide indicators, or `early warning signals’, of approaching ecosystem shifts?
